Gestational Diabetes – My biggest bugbear

Gestational Diabetes – My biggest bugbear

Blog
As a midwife with a special interest in Gestational Diabetes, one of my biggest bugbears is the early discussion around having a balanced diet during pregnancy - or should i say the lack of early discussion!  Simply stating ‘you need a balanced diet’ is just not enough, yet i found this is mainly the extent of discussion women had with either their Midwife or GP. Then of course you get to 28 weeks (or thereabouts) and have a glucose tolerance test, results come back high - it’s not easy to undo, not easy to un-diagnose but could this be different with more information/education?  The answer in a lot of cases is simply yes!!   The most common phrase i hear following a diagnosis is ‘I’ve cut out/down on all the…

Being A Student Midwife: Hannah’s Journey

Being A Student Midwife: Hannah’s Journey

Blog
Hi! I’m Hannah and I met Lynsey through teaching hypnobirthing. I am a final year student midwife and hypnobirthing teacher at Reframing Birth in East Sussex. Lynsey asked me to write about my journey to becoming a midwife so I will do exactly that, I hope it is interesting and anyone thinking of taking the leap is inspired to do so! Going into a caring profession had always been a priority for me, but it wasn’t until I started my A Levels that I truly considered midwifery. Autumn Inspiration

Blog
I don’t know why, but I’ve always loved this time of year. I find it a time of ‘slowing down’ just a little, warm cosy nights in and a time of reflection and inspiration. The gorgeous colour of the leaves, the changes in nature and the countdown to Christmas – I find It magical. I’ve been having a think about lots of things today, mainly how privileged I am to have the job that I do. Yes, I’m making some exciting changes and heading in a bit of a new direction and at the heart is still what I love – midwifery. I really do meet some of the loveliest, most inspirational people you could ever imagine. I may only be with a lady for a short time, like in…

Induction? Nooooo don’t do it!

Induction? Nooooo don’t do it!

Information
So this week in The Little Birth Company Community we have been talking about place of birth, home, MLU or hospital and this has led on to the sharing of some great birth stories involving Induction. It’s an interesting one because historically my reaction when anyone would share with me they were going to be induced was usually, ‘Nooooo don’t do it’, in my head of course! Now don’t get me wrong I still totally advocate that when possible a physiological birth is the way to go, but in the awesome community of women that we support in The Little Birth Company it is so reassuring to hear that for those women who have been induced so many of them report back a positive birth experience as a result of…
